Forestry Management

Penn Forest Products helps landowners achieve their environmental, social, and economic goals while preserving the health of the ecosystem including wildlife, water, soil, and the forest itself. Short term and long-term goals of each landowner are taken into consideration before timber harvesting begins. This is done through a selective harvest by clearing decayed and fully matured hardwood timber. It is very important that a forester be a part of the decision-making process when attempting to achieve these goals and ensure the integrity of the property and so that their is proper regrowth for future use and or harvest.

Clearing decayed and fully matured hardwood timber involves the removal of old or diseased trees from a forest or wooded area. This process is typically undertaken to promote forest health, mitigate potential hazards, and manage the availability of valuable timber resources. Here’s an overview of the steps involved in this process:

  1. Assessment and Planning: Before beginning any tree removal, it’s essential to conduct a thorough assessment of the forest or wooded area. Identify trees that are decayed, dead, or fully matured and determine the overall health and condition of the timber. Work with forestry experts or arborists to create a clear plan for the selective removal of the identified trees while maintaining the ecological balance of the forest.

  2. Obtain Necessary Permissions: Depending on the location and regulations in your area, you may need to obtain permits or approvals to clear the timber. Some forests may be protected, and there might be restrictions on tree removal to preserve the ecosystem and wildlife habitats. Ensure that you comply with all local, state, and federal laws related to tree removal and forestry management.

  3. Safety Precautions: Timber clearing can be hazardous, especially when dealing with decayed or unstable trees. Prioritize safety during the entire process. Use appropriate safety gear and equipment, and consider hiring experienced and trained professionals for the job.

  4. Tree Removal: Depending on the size and location of the trees, different methods can be used for tree removal. For larger trees, a professional tree removal company might use specialized equipment like cranes or bucket trucks to safely take down the trees in sections. Smaller trees can be felled using chainsaws or other cutting tools.

  5. Wood Utilization: After the trees are removed, the harvested timber can be processed for various purposes. Fully matured hardwood timber can be used for lumber, furniture making, flooring, and other woodworking applications. However, decayed or diseased wood may not be suitable for such purposes. It can still be used for other purposes like firewood, wood chips, or mulch.

  6. Environmental Considerations: During the tree removal process, take care to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment. Avoid damaging other healthy trees and vegetation. If feasible, consider implementing sustainable forestry practices to ensure the long-term health of the forest ecosystem.

  7. Site Cleanup: After the timber clearing is complete, remove any debris and waste from the site to restore the area as close to its natural state as possible.

Always remember that responsible timber clearing is crucial for maintaining the health of the forest and preserving natural habitats. If you need this work done contact Penn Forest Products and  our forestry professionals or arborists will ensure the work is done safely and with the utmost care for the environment.

At our Smicksburg, PA. location we buy in and saw Appalachian hardwoods into a variety of products which include green lumber 4/4 & 5/4 as well as produce railroad ties, blocking, pallet boards, and sawdust. Watch Video

  1. Railroad ties (also known as sleepers): Railroad ties are large wooden beams used to support and secure railroad tracks. They are traditionally made from hardwoods like oak, hickory, or tropical hardwoods due to their durability and strength. The production process involves cutting and shaping logs into the desired dimensions, treating the wood to increase its lifespan, and then sanding and finishing the ties.
  2. Blocking: In the context of shipping and logistics, blocking refers to the process of using wood to secure and support cargo during transportation. Blocking is usually custom-cut to fit the specific cargo and prevent movement or damage during transit. The production process involves cutting and shaping wooden blocks to the required specifications.
  3. Pallet boards: Pallet boards are the individual planks that make up a pallet, a flat transport structure used to support goods during shipping. Pallet boards are typically made from softwood species like pine, as they are more economical than hardwoods. The production process involves sawing logs into boards of uniform dimensions, drying the wood to reduce moisture content, and sometimes treating the wood to prevent decay and pest infestation.
  4. Sawdust: Sawdust is a byproduct of sawmilling or woodworking processes. It is the fine particles and shavings created when cutting or shaping wood using a saw. Sawdust can be collected and used for various purposes, such as wood fuel, animal bedding, composite materials, and some agricultural applications.

Green/Kiln Dried Lumber

We specialize in 4/4 5/4 Appalachian green hardwoods which include Poplar, Oaks, Hickory, Maples and more. For Kiln Dried Lumber we specialize in making 5/4 Red Oak and White Oak longs from 13-16’ lengths both random and wides FAS1F+.

  1. Kiln Dried Lumber: Kiln drying is a crucial process in lumber production. It involves placing the freshly sawn wood in a specialized kiln to reduce its moisture content. Kiln drying helps stabilize the wood, preventing warping, cracking, and fungal growth, and ensures that the lumber meets specific moisture content standards.

  2. 5/4 Thickness: The term “5/4” refers to the thickness of the lumber, which is 1.25 inches (5 quarters of an inch). This thickness is commonly used in various woodworking applications, including furniture making, cabinetry, and flooring.

  3. Red Oak and White Oak: Red Oak and White Oak are both popular hardwood species used in various woodworking projects due to their appealing appearance, strength, and durability. Red Oak is known for its warm reddish-brown color, while White Oak has a lighter, almost tan hue. Both species are highly sought after for their grain patterns and workability.

  4. Long Lengths: Offering lumber in long lengths ranging from 13 to 16 feet can be advantageous for customers who require extended boards for specific projects, such as architectural elements, custom furniture, or flooring installations without visible joints.

  5. Random and Wides: Providing lumber in both random widths and wider planks gives your customers flexibility and options in their woodworking projects. Some customers may prefer a mix of widths for more versatile usage.

  6. FAS1F+ Grade: The FAS (Firsts and Seconds) grade is a high-quality lumber grade, indicating that the wood is mostly clear of defects. The “1F+” refers to a premium face and specifies that one face of the lumber board is free of defects, knots, or blemishes. This grade is particularly valued by woodworking professionals and craftsmen.

To successfully run a business specializing in these specific lumber products, it’s essential to have access to a reliable supply of high-quality Red Oak and White Oak logs, invest in proper kiln drying equipment, and maintain a well-organized inventory system to manage the various lengths and grades of lumber efficiently. Marketing your products to woodworking professionals, furniture makers, and flooring companies can help establish a strong customer base.

Forest management is essential in Maryland for several reasons:

Biodiversity conservation:

Maryland’s forests are home to a wide range of plant and animal species. Proper forest management helps maintain and enhance biodiversity by ensuring that different habitats and ecosystems are preserved. This allows native species to thrive and provides a sanctuary for endangered and threatened species.

Watershed protection:

Forests play a crucial role in maintaining the health of watersheds. They act as natural filters, trapping sediment and pollutants before they enter streams and rivers. Healthy forests also help regulate the flow of water, reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall and ensuring a stable supply of clean water for both human use and wildlife.

Carbon sequestration:

Forests are significant carbon sinks, meaning they absorb and store large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Proper forest management can enhance this role, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Timber and economic benefits:

Maryland’s forests are a valuable source of timber and other forest products, contributing to the state’s economy. Sustainable forest management practices ensure that these resources are harvested responsibly and replenished over time, allowing for continued economic benefits without degrading the environment.

Recreational opportunities:

Maryland’s forests provide numerous recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. These include hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and birdwatching. Effective forest management ensures that these activities can be enjoyed while preserving the natural beauty and integrity of the forests.

Aesthetic and cultural value:

Forests hold significant aesthetic and cultural value for people in Maryland. Many individuals value the natural beauty of forests and appreciate the sense of tranquility and connection to nature they provide. Native American tribes and other cultural groups also have historical ties to the forests, making their preservation an important cultural consideration.

Fire prevention and management:

Proper Forest management involves measures to reduce the risk of wildfires and improve the ability to manage fires when they do occur. Controlled burns and other techniques can help prevent the spread of destructive wildfires, protecting both the forests and nearby communities.

Overall, forest management in Maryland is crucial for maintaining ecological balance, sustaining biodiversity, supporting the economy, and preserving the various benefits that forests provide to both the environment and society. It involves careful planning, monitoring, and collaboration between stakeholders to ensure the long-term health and viability of the state’s forests.
